Transition Pieces
Once a boat landing had been fitted to a pile, it was followed by the installation of
a “transition piece”, which forms a base upon which the wind turbine stands.
A crane affixed to the deck of a jack-up barge lowered the transition piece over
the upper section of each pile, so that it slots over the top of the foundation like a sleeve.
The transition piece was then fully secured in position using an industrial grout.
The transportation and installation of the transition pieces was carried out using the
jack-up barge “Wind”.The transition pieces, which are painted bright yellow for visibility,
were pre-fitted with an external ladder, a top access platform and two intermediate rest
platforms, which assists maintenance personnel in accessing the wind turbines.
